Mike presented a lot of details last evening regarding barotrauma. Mike has since sent some links for information as a follow-up included in this note. I mentioned you should feel free to contact Mike about any topic related to fishing - if he is not the expert - he will find one for you.

    • Return em’ Right. Many of your member who fish offshore seemed to be familiar with the program but it may be good to remind folks that they can still get a free fish descending device (while supplies/funding lasts) and that the website is a great repository for barotrauma resources if anyone is inclined to do more digging.
    • This is the latest study I saw regarding barotrauma and release mortality for red snapper and red grouper that I cited a few times in yesterdays talk, attached is the full paper
    • The venting needle I raffled off was from AnglerCo. I know some folks wondered where I got them from, seems like a good tool but the one I prefer is the Provent which is similar but no longer manufactured. Honestly like I mentioned in the talk, a 5ml syringe with a 16 gauge or larger diameter needle would be an effective and cheap option.
    • Many of my resources and program links can be found on this Linktree page here

One of your members asked if there was a citizen science fish tagging program for rec anglers and I have emailed Kali and another FWRI biologist today asking if those programs exist. I’m going to a UF fisheries and aquatic science program advisory committee meeting next week and a Gulf Council meeting in Alabama the week after and if I see the right person, ill bring that thought up to them.

    Less related:

    • Rookery Bay’s Team Ocean is always looking for more volunteers, attached is a flyer and more about volunteering can be found here and on the attachment. We use them for our horseshoe tagging program where they shuttle folks back and forth to the Caxambas Pass CWA. It may be a fun opportunity for retired members to help operate vessels, walk some less accessible beaches and share marine stewardship.

Leave me a comment if you find this type of post-meeting follow up is worthwhile

    Keith
